Features of a Room Air Purifier

Air purifiers include a fan with varying speed levels such as low, medium, and high. The fan's job is to pull air into the device. Most purifiers also feature a service indicator, which issues an alert when it's time to change or clean the air filter or collector-plate.
When consumers bring home an enhanced air purifier, they may have a device with air quality sensors. With a technologically advanced purifier, the unit will increase its fan speed when it senses poor air quality.

Air purifiers include several measurements, which will help consumers choose their unit. The Air Changes Per Hour, or ACH, is a calculation that defines the air purifier's frequency in cleansing all of the air in the room. For instance, when an air purifier box states that the device features an ACH rating of four for a 10' x 10' room, the unit will clean all of the air in a room that size four times each hour.

When someone in the home suffers from asthma or allergies, then homeowners should purchase a unit with an ACH rating of at least four and should consider upgrading to a six or an eight.

Another air purifying measurement is the Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR. The Associate of Home Appliance Manufacturers reviews air purifiers to determine the amount of air purified by the device. The association also assesses how well the appliance does its job. When consumers purchase a unit with an AHAM Certified label, they'll bring home an air purifier that will eliminate particles caused by pollen, dust, and tobacco smoke.

With a higher CADR rating, consumers will have a unit that provides more home protection. Most air purifier manufacturers offer a warranty on their product. Be sure to locate a device with at least a five-year warranty. However, several companies offer a 10-year warranty. Consumers should review the warranty specifications.

For example, the added protection will typically cover the unit's electrical elements, motor, and fan. In some cases, an air purifier company may void a warranty when the air filter is not changed regularly.
